So, I wanted to do something special for my step-son Adam to congratulate him on making Staff Sergeant recently.
Here's the pen I made for him. The Staff Sergeant badge is laser cut from a Holly blank and then dyed blue. Then the pieces are all put together on the brass tube that the hardware presses into. I turned it very carefully on the lathe using only a skew with very light cuts. This way I didn't have to do any sanding because sanding would have gotten the blue dust into the white of the holly. I was able to keep it nice and clean, with no "bleeding" of the colors! Once the shape was done, I finished it with CA acrylic and polished it out to a brilliant shine. I decide to put this on a bolt action because Adam used to be on the drill team and spin rifles. Plus being military, the bolt action rifle was fitting. I think that one of our Liberty Bolt Actions would have been a good choice as well.
I can make these in any rank and service for anyone interested. If you know someone in the service and would like to get them a one-of-a-kind pen, let me know and I can make it.
Congrats again Adam for a job well done. Your mom and I are so proud of you and your accomplishments. Keep up the good work, and thank you for your service.
I love to work with my hands and take pride my attention to detail and finishes. I believe you're never too old to learn new skills and continue to learn and grow in my craft. I love to try new ideas to see if they will work and learn from each one that I do. You can never know everything about anyone thing. There's always something to learn.
